Punkva Caves

The Moravský Kras (Moravian Karst) region of the Czech Republic is home to more than 1,000 caves and gorges. Shown here is a view from inside the Punkva caves, the most popular caves of the Moravský Kras.

Hugo František Salm was the first recorded explorer to attempt to penetrate into the underground portion of the Punkva River in 1808, using a simple raft. It was not until the early 19th century that other explorers led by Karel Absolon were able to penetrate into the main entrance of the Punkva caves.

In 1914, the team was able to connect the dry portion of the caves to the nearby Macocha abyss. However, it was not until 1933 after a 33-meter deep flooded area had been successfully pumped out of the caves that Absolon was able to connect the areas, providing access from the abyss to the wet part of the caves.

Since July 1st of 1933, visitors have been able to complete a 1.2km tour that includes gigantic domes, beautiful stalagmites and stalactites, the stunning abyss, and an enchanting boat ride.

An arresting sight within the caves is the closeness between a particular stalagmite and stalactite. The pair is known as Romeo and Juliet because the formations are now dry and will never touch.
